Cézanne: from outsider to Old Master – Talk by Dr Malcolm Gee

3rd December at 1.30pm
Learning Room at the Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Portrait of Ambroise Vollard by Paul Cezanne (Petit Palais, Paris)

This talk will examine the process through which Cézanne became established as a central figure in the history of modern European art in the period c.1890-1939. It will focus specifically on the key roles played by specific artists, dealers, critics and collectors in this history. What were the distinctive qualities they valued in his work, how did they disseminate understanding and appreciation of it, why and how were they influential in the art world of their time?

Having taught there for many years Malcolm Gee is currently a Visiting Fellow in Art and Cultural History at Northumbria University. His specialist interests are late 19th and early 20th century European and American art; art institutions, the art market and the art press; urban cultural history in the modern period; political cartoons and caricature.
