Workshop by Katherine Renton – Coal, Colour & Castles

Saturday 16 September 2023 11.30 – 3.30pm Cost: £17 (£22 for non members)
Learning Room at the Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.

A four hour workshop with Northumberland-based artist Katherine Renton. Katherine will give a talk and demonstration on her work in which she uses watercolours that she makes from seacoal and other materials that she sources from the Northumberland coastline.

Through her unusual medium and process she references regional industries and its repercussions on the environment and the lives of its people.

During the workshop she will look at the history of Northumberland through art, initially relating her own work to that of the Lindisfarne Gospels (which was also created from paints that were made using local materials) and watercolours of Northumberland by Turner, particularly his paintings of the regional castles.

Katherine will run a workshop in which opportunities will be provided to explore more experimental watercolour painting techniques, and ultimately lead to watercolour studies of Northumberland castles.

Basic materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own watercolour paints, watercolour paper (in sizes ranging from A4 to A3 and A2), watercolour brushes, and a mixing palette.

If you are interested in attending this workshop, email josephinecousin@googlemail.com.

The workshop costs £17 for members and £22 for non-members.
