Reviews of our recent workshop by Kittie Jones

Kittie presented an illustrated talk about her work and demonstrated how she works from the landscape using charcoal and pastel. Attendees were given the opportunity to try the materials and techniques used by her themselves. You can see more of Kittie’s work on her website, kittiejones.com

Kittie Jones workshop was very successful and enjoyed by everyone. Kittie was very efficient, friendly and welcoming. Kitties talk and demonstration were very inspiring.  The workshop included using charcoal and water and everyone enjoyed using these materials and the results they brought.

This was the first time we had incorporated a talk, demonstration and workshop. It worked very well.  We will hopefully use this format again in the future.

Kittie Jones presented a very interesting talk and demonstration of her work. Her sketches and paintings made on cliff tops and in rugged landscapes and wild weather capture her immersion in the natural surroundings and the chaos and movement of sea birds. Kittie demonstrated very well her process and creative use of materials. We were able to work from a large screen video to give us a sense of trying to draw from a moving image. Kittie was very encouraging and found something positive to say about each of our attempts. Thank you Kittie for a very enjoyable and enriching afternoon.

Kittie’s talk was so interesting. [I am] in awe of her drawing underwater and on the cliff edge and how challenging that was as well as her experiences working on Bass Rock (a tiny island formed from a plug of volcanic rock in the Firth of Forth, Scotland). Her work captures that landscape so well!

We learnt so much; ways of combining charcoal and pastels to gain the results she achieves, drawing from a moving image on the big screen. It almost felt like working plein-air with the background sounds of the birds and waves.

She has inspired me to carry a larger sketchbook and do more work outdoors in my favourite coastal settings. Thank you for facilitating this enjoyable workshop.
