Reviews of our recent workshop by Rob Newton

Rob Newton's workshop

Robert’s session for the Friends of the Hatton in November was fascinating. He talked about growing up in the County Durham countryside, his love of nature and the landscape, his artistic influences and how he came to formal art education.

During his talk he showed drawings, prints and paintings he had made throughout his career as an artist. There were schoolboy drawings, prints he made as a student alongside the oil paintings he is better known for. He showed us his most sketchbook work from his recent trip to the Scottish Islands.

Robert gave an overview and demonstration of his sketching practice and how his rapid sketches translate and develop into larger works. These rapid sketching techniques were explored during the workshop along with other watercolour techniques. You can see Robert’s work on his website robertnewtonartist.co.uk/ and Instagram @robnewtonartist.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the recent talk/ workshop by Rob Newton. It was really interesting to see and hear how his work had developed over the years.

And it was great to have a demonstration from him and a chance to try his sketching style ourselves (with materials available to use). I’ll certainly be looking to come to other future events

I attended [Rob Newton’s] workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it. Rob was informative and inspiring and the balance of his presentation with the practical work was very good. Everyone was very welcoming too.
