Saturday 27 January – 11.30 till 3.30

Luke comes from the Amble in Northumberland. He will give a talk before his workshop which will focus on his background, his influences and his relationship to place and the landscape.
Luke has a great love for Art History and thinks that a huge part of progressing as a painter is involved in the study of past works of art. He will speak about his love of mid-to-late 19th, and early 20th century French painting. He will also speak about the work of British Painters to whom he feels a connection. This will lead into his workshop where participants will begin to look at historical paintings of the region and further afield.
Luke’s workshop will place a focus on drawing from Art History, both in a literal and figurative sense. Taking a lead from painters like Turner, and using his images of Northumberland, Luke will lead a session that involves the study, drawing and reusing of these works. Believing in Bonnard’s motto that ‘a well composed painting is already half finished’, Luke will seek to make visible the hidden aspects of these great works. Demonstrating how painters like Turner took great liberties with composition, moving and reassembling pieces of landscape across the page, all to serve the creation of a more coherent, striking and vital image. Starting with images of the North-East, we will then look at more well-known works from further afield. Another influence on Luke is the 16th century Dutch-master, Bruegel, we will study some of his complex paintings and understand how he constructed elaborate compositions.
For the final part of the workshop participants will be invited to work from their own source material and begin to apply some of the different things learned to their own interests. Luke will aim to get around all members and speak one-to-one about their concerns and difficulties and aim to provide positive support and guidance. With Luke believing that painting is a fundamentally collegial activity, participants will be welcome to pitch-in at all points of the workshop, offering up their views and insights as a means of solving the problems inherent to painting. Members will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to look at and analyse paintings, how to apply what they learn to their own work and subsequently how to try and construct better paintings.
Charcoal and Paper will be provided but participants should to bring the following:
- Source Materials, i.e. Photographs, Sketches, Books, Postcards
These will be used in the last part of the workshop. If you have any source photographs or sketches you’ve had trouble translating into paintings feel free to bring these along to discuss. - Paints, Brushes and Paper/Canvas/Board etc.
The workshop is flexible. You can work in your preferred medium. The intention is to allow you to try and apply some of the things learned from looking at other paintings to your own work. If you don’t wish to paint in the final part you are free to continue making drawings. - Alternative Drawing Materials
Luke prefers to work with Charcoal, this is the medium he will be demonstrating. If you prefer to use graphite or ink please bring along and work with you.
