Workshop by Edward Hillier – Falling in Love with Paint (again)

Edward Hillier Wild Flowers

Saturday 17 February – 11.30 till 2.30

Join the artist Edward Hillier for an energetic 3 hour workshop.  Suitable for everyone from the newly minted beginner to seasoned veterans, landscape, portrait, abstract or none of the above – this workshop will help you reconnect with the things that inspired you to paint in the first place.  It truly is a workshop for all artists!

The workshop is divided into two parts.  Part 1 will be a warm up – participants will make a series of rapid drawings using a range of different materials, including compressed charcoal, watercolour, pencil and ink.  These drawings are designed to develop a range of marks and to help participants think about their creative process in a different way – for example “what holds you back?”  “How do you feel about abandoning a drawing before it’s completed?”  Everyone will also prepare a surface to paint on.

Part 2 will be spent putting ideas into practice to create a painting on the prepared surfaces.  This painting will use the marks and ideas developed in the drawings to inform the painting which can be entirely abstract, entirely representational or somewhere in between.

During the workshop Edward will also give an illustrated talk about his work and his own artistic journey.  He will explore influences and themes as well as the technical aspects of his practice.

This is not a technique based workshop- everyone will produce something completely different.

Materials

Most materials will be provided so don’t worry too much about having exactly the right equipment but it might enhance the experience if you bring

  1. Acrylic paint (a range of colours, just bring whatever you have to hand)
  2. You might want to bring something to inspire you – photographs, objects, this is optional
