Saturday 21 September, 11.30 till 2.30pm – Learning Room at the gallery
Leila’s workshop looks like it will be a fascinating and activity packed three hours. In the first part she will introduce her work and research and show some of the objects she has made during recent practice. Following on from this she will consider how artists can use Artificial Intelligence [AI] responsively and creatively and ask important questions about Art through the eye of a machine:
- How does AI generate images?
- What kinds of images does it produce? showing examples she has created
- What are the pitfalls of machine generated images?
And then how AI can be used ethically through the artist/designer’s lens:
- How are artists using AI to create work?
- What do artists have to say about image provenance?
- Is AI innovation just like the invention of photography?
Following on from this, you, the participants are the AI image generator! You will be invited to create a collage based on your own understandings of AI/ or Newcastle in 2050 (tbd).
This activity is designed to elicit your hopes, dreams and concerns about the future AI poses and will show how we think about AI as artists.
An integral part of the workshop will be a short ‘show and tell’ session where you can talk about your creation(s) (this is intended to encourage idea sharing and is not a critique session).
During lunch, Leila will generate hybrid AI images from these collages.
For the second iteration of collages, Leila will give a live demonstration of an AI image generator.
She will use it to collaboratively create a set of images, using audience suggestions and word prompts that can be used by the generator to create images from text.
These images will be used as additional visual prompts for a second collage session.
Outcomes:
Participants will have learned about AI image generation and created their own collages in response to this theme. Participants will have explored image creation through playful interactions with speculative objects and the creation of their own collages.
Materials provided include: a3 substrate, selection of papers for cutting up and using in collage, scissors, glue, acrylic paint, washi tape, stamps.
Charge: £20 for Friends, £25 for non-members
