Fabric Memory Book workshop with Louise Underwood

Florence Textile Book by Louise Underwood

Saturday 9 November, 11.30 till 2.30pmLearning Room at the gallery

During the workshop, Louise will provide you with a brief guide to Fabric Art Memory Books looking at the work of other artists who use this beautiful and engaging technique to create lasting and useable artworks. You will look at the many different textile skills you can bring to the project, enabling you to produce a piece transferable to your personal skills and interest.

The aim of the workshop is to help you establish the beginnings of a project which will take you into through the Winter months, one you can dip into and add to at your leisure. Using recycled materials, found objects, inkjet fabric printing and simple stitches, you will look at and begin making pages for your book. By the end of the session, you will know how to create a fabric cover, bind pages and begin work on your own, beautiful Fabric Art Memory Book.

Although all materials and equipment will be provided for the workshop. Please bring any buttons, broken jewellery, pieces of clean, pretty fabric etc. to add to your book. It does not matter how small. Pretty hankies and even tea towels can make great bases to work on.

Louise is a textile artist based in 36 Lime Street, Newcastle. She makes unique pieces, working with traditional northeast techniques: patchwork, quilting, hooky and proggy matting, as well as spinning, embroidery, felting, batik upholstery, printing and community yarn-bombing. She has collaborated on and co-coordinated many collaborative projects, including designing the quilt, teaching over 100 people to English Paper Piece (EPP), and making the Shipley Art Gallery’s Centenary Quilt (which is on display in the gallery). More recently, she worked with people from across the northeast to make three collaborative quilts to commemorate the lives of family and friends. These three quilts are currently on tour across the northeast.

Louises’ studio is open to the public to visit three times a year. You can visit her during Ouseburn Open Studios on 23 and 24 November, at 36 Lime Street, Studio 2D.

Charge: £20 for Friends, £25 for non-members
