Slow Stitching for Spring – a workshop with Jo Duncan

Slow stitching workshop with Jo Duncan

Saturday 12 April, 11.30 – 3.30 pm. £20 for Friends, £25 for non-members

Slow stitching is a real trend in crafting at the moment, focusing on the mindful making of pieces to promote calm and well-being through creativity. Jo Duncan became interested in this after discovering the Japanese art of Sashiko and then exploring American traditional ‘Redwork’ and primitive stitched designs. She has used slow stitching in several different ways to enhance her own quilting and patchwork projects, inspired by textile artists like Gail Pan and Linnette Anderson, and is keen to share the tips and tricks she’s discovered for transferring patterns to fabric and stitching them.

In this workshop, we’ll use perle cotton threads, calico and patchwork fabric to create two seasonal panels. Using simple embroidery stitches and basic hand sewing, we’ll first create a mini spring banner, with a choice of designs. We’ll then make the parts for a seasonal goodie bag – perfect for filling with mini chocolate eggs! This is based on a traditional Japanese rice bag design and features a seasonal embroidered panel. This project can either be completed by hand sewing in the workshop, (if time allows) or can be taken home to complete by using a sewing machine: a full take- away guide will be provided, along with instructions for a matching embroidered gift tag and plenty of inspiration for your next slow-stitching make!

All materials will be provided to complete the banner, goodie bag and take away gift tag. All tools will be provided, but you may wish to bring a needle threader if you use one.
