Learning skills and approaches to sketching, from JMW Turner and other great artists who have all tackled Newcastle as a subject.

Local artists Luke McTaggart and Katherine Renton team up for an entertaining session which will give you insights into the art work of numerous artists who have been inspired by Newcastle, and provide the inspiration for you to get outside and start sketching your own surroundings!

During the session we will be looking at a range of sketching techniques used by well-known artists, and discussing the purposes of sketching, including their  use to paint a finished masterpiece! We will celebrate the painting, and sketch, ‘Newcastle-on-Tyne’ by the great JMW Turner in 1823, as well as studying the work of other Newcastle artists. Luke and Katherine will then take you through a series of useful activities which will hone your sketching skills, and, if the weather allows, we will be heading into the university grounds to have a go at some real outdoor sketching!

Basic sketching materials will be provided, and you are welcome to bring along your own equipment. We also recommend that you come equipped with warm waterproof clothing, you may wish to bring along your own portable seating.
