Review of our recent workshop by Louise Underwood

Louise opened the workshop with a really interesting slide show with many visual examples charting the history of patchwork and quilting from its earliest known conception to present day. Louise went on to show images of her own work along with examples of some of the community projects she has been involved in.

Fully inspired we were then taken through the process of using English Paper Pieces (EPP). A traditional technique to ensure the patchwork pieces would match when joined, creating a nice neat finish. Louise had brought a number of samples of different patterns combinations for us to look at.

We were each given our own kit along with easy to follow instructions which Louise had prepared in advance of the workshop. These included ready cut fabric and paper pieces which allowed us to get straight on with stitching the patchwork pieces together and trying out the EPP method.

Once everyone had started stitching, the room went very quiet, everyone was completely “in the zone” – it was an extremely good mindfulness exercise. Everyone enjoyed it so much, it spurred on discussion to see if we could come together to make our own shared piece that could be exhibited at a later date. It was suggested that Louise be invited back in the not too distant future to discuss possible ideas and see if a combined patchwork would be feasible.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable workshop and I can’t wait for the next one!
